Thank you for contacting Desert Harbor Doberman Rescue of Arizona. We look forward to working with you!

First, we recommend that you spend some time on our website getting to know us and the breed.  Then complete our adoption application below.  Please complete it fully, including a veterinarian reference. (If you leave something out, the process will be delayed.) If you’d like to know more about our procedures, please see The Process.

When  your application is approved, we’ll speak with you by phone to explain our process and answer any questions you may have.

Then we’ll ask to meet with your family, including your current animals, in your home.  Promise, we won’t wear our white gloves or bring the taste police! We’re visiting as the dog’s ally and your partner in adoption. Use this time to ask any questions, please–though you can always contact us at any time.

Next, we’ll invite you to meet the dog you’ve selected, and help you properly introduce your choice to your family and your pets.

If everybody gets along well and you decide to adopt, we’ll ask you for an adoption fee based ranging from $250 to $500, depending on the dog’s training, health, special care needs, age, condition, pedigree status, and “curb appeal.” Because we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, any part of the fee over our actual veterinary costs may be tax deductible. Please check with your tax advisor. All fees and contributions go straight to fund the needs of the dogs.

Our fees keeps us in business. They are the reason we can provide a thorough veterinary intake procedure that we think is  unmatched by any Doberman rescue organization in the Southwest. They also helps to screen out those who can’t afford the proper care of a dog. Experts advise budgeting to spend at least $500 per dog per year–and that doesn’t count emergency care.  It’s been our experience that people who can’t or won’t provide a reasonable adoption fee probably also can’t or won’t spend what it takes to support a Doberman adequately–even one with no health issues. Last but not least, this requested fee discourages low-life scammers who prowl the Internet in search of free dogs to sell to laboratories or to use as bait in dog fighting.

All this may sound like a lot to ask, but keep in mind that we want things to work out, and that our first job is to look out for the dogs.
